For many agencies, 2021 will be a year of establishing better data governance and driving home the importance of data literacy.
Data Literacy is “the ability to read, write, and communicate data in
context, including an understanding of data sources and constructs,
analytical methods and techniques applied, and the ability to describe the
use-case application and resulting value.”
Data and analytics have proven to be valuable assets to organizations, but in order to truly harvest this value, all employees need to be able to understand and utilize the information relevant to their role, at the speed of your mission and vision. Honestly, along with capital, your organization’s ability to interpret data determines the speed and accuracy of your vision’s fulfillment. Traditional business drivers include “people, processes, and technology,” but digital transformation requires the addition of “data” to be added to this trinity. Understanding the “how” and “why” must be the goal of enterprise digital transformation efforts. It must become second nature, and Data Literacy cannot be an afterthought.
- Identify and empower a Data Literacy Champion or Sponsor within your organization that focuses on shifting the Data-Driven culture within the enterprise and across ecosystems.
- Service Providers should incorporate Data Literacy into their Service Strategy and Service Transition activities. This should involve including outcome-driven stories into any DevOps sprint cycles.
- Work with Human Resources to develop a pilot Data Literacy training program that allows trainees to work through Decision Modeling and how to leverage new technology capabilities to provide decision-ready information to support organizations’ outcomes and objectives.
