On Saturday, August 26, Chenega MIOS was proud to attend a ceremony hosted by Honor Flight DC to celebrate 35 veterans who traveled in from Austin, TX, and served in the Vietnam War and World War II (WWII). Ahead of the ceremony, Chenega MIOS volunteers and their family members lined up outside the WWII Memorial to welcome the veterans in and thank them for their incredible years of service. This inevitably became emotional as a warm welcome like this is something these heroic individuals never received from the public upon returning from war.
After cheering on the veterans and the guardians who walked them down, the MIOS volunteers joined the group in the middle of the WWII Memorial as the ceremony began. The Color Guard presented the flags while Miss District of Columbia, Jude Maboné, beautifully sang the National Anthem. Following the anthem, Taps was performed as a call to remember the lives of the military comrades lost in the wars these veterans served in. Chenega MIOS was extremely honored to be a part of this incredible ceremony, recognizing some of our greatest heroes as they took the opportunity, many for the first time in their lives, to visit Washington DC and its meaningful monuments.
