On Thursday, May 16, Chenega MIOS hosted the 13th Annual Chenega Invitational Charity Golf Tournament at Old Hickory Golf Club in Woodbridge, Virginia. This year Chenega MIOS surpassed our goal of $70,000 and collected $100,000 for Azalea Charities Aid for Wounded Warriors.
Azalea Charities’ Aid for Wounded Warriors provides comfort and relief items for wounded service members and their families. Since June 2004, the project has worked to help lift the spirits and morale of those brave heroes who so courageously served our country.
The day kicked off with a moving speech from Marine Corps veteran, Chris Vaughn. During his two deployments with the 3rd Battalion 8th Marines, Vaughn served in combat in Fallujah and Ramadi, Iraq where his unit lost several Marines. After struggling in his transition period, he now pays it forward by working as a peer counselor with other veterans.
“I really think they need a shot of hope and that’s exactly what Azalea Charities did for me. When I quit caring about myself, and I thought everybody else did, and the world was coming to an end, here’s this phone call I get that felt like it came from above: ‘hey these guys are sending you treatment,’ said Vaughn. “Not only did it give me a second chance, but it also kind of ignited a fire in me to give back the same way they selflessly gave to me.”
John Campagna, Army veteran and president of Chenega MIOS closed the morning ceremonies with a few words of praise about Azalea Charities and a few friendly words of encouragement about the proceeding golf tournament.
When the 38 teams finished their games, everyone came inside for lunch and the awards ceremony. Chenega MIOS presented the check to Azalea and announced that the 13th Invitational was able to raise more than any other previous year.
From all of us at MIOS, we would like to thank everyone who contributed to the 13th Annual Chenega Invitational and Azalea Charities. Your donations will help Azalea Charities’ to continue providing our wounded service members and their families with the support they need. Thank you again to everyone who donated their time, energy, or made a contribution to this wonderful cause.
